On Monday the 4th of October 2021 the world experienced a major outage on platforms, including: Facebook, Instagram and WhatsApp. It’s not the first time in the past year where something like this has happened, with Google and all its products going down on December 14, 2020. We tried to access Instagram on Monday to find the following message “Sorry, something went wrong. We’re working on it and will fix it as soon as we can.” This made us think how important it is to diversify the platforms you post on. As a business owner you should be ready for anything. As Warren Buffet says: “Don’t put all your eggs in one basket”. What if Instagram was down for ever? I know a bit dramatic, but it is 2021 after all. Anything can happen LOL.
Reason 1: Changes in algorithm
Firstly, algorithm’s change all the time.
Example, In 2010 Google made about 400 algorithm changes throughout the year and business’s that solely relied on SEM (Search Engine Marketing) and SEO (Search Engine Optimisation) struggled. The one’s who diversified their traffic sources and marketed on a number of social media outlets ultimately won.
Reason 2: Social Media Outages! Instagram down! Facebook Down!
Secondly, an outage like we experienced means that you can still access the audience members you’ve built on other platforms. If you were doing an IG live during the outage you could switch to Twitter live or Tik Tok live and pick it up with the viewers that follow you there.
Reason 3: Create different audiences with unique content
Thirdly, Each platform requires slightly different styles of content which could attract different audiences. For example: Content on LinkedIn is going to be a lot more formal and professional compared to content on TikTok which should be more engaging and entertaining. Another example is the ratios in which you post content. Read our blog post about The Rise of Portrait Content here.
Reason 4: Cross-promote content from other platforms
Finally, it’s a great idea to post your bigger campaigns from one platform to another so that you increase awareness of your brand and your content.
In conclusion, regardless of what happens to these big tech giants that now run our lives we can be prepared for anything by building a strong following on each platform.
